Macworld Expo: Full of Phil, Light on Stuff

While we’re at Macworld Expo, we’ve gotta be honest… there’s not much here. iWork ‘09 is available for a demo, and you can see iLife ‘09 on Apple’s web site, and in the streaming copy of the keynote that’ll be posted tonight.

As for on the show floor, there aren’t any real “wow” announcements from third parties.

Probably the biggest event on the show floor, was a Jobs-esque appearance by Phil Schiller. Of course, we were there.

Brief Announcement on Upcoming Changes, and Christmas Deals

So, yes, first I’d like to announce that we’re being integrated into the MechaWorks network of sites. MacEee.com will be transformed into the most tech-savvy site on netbooks and nettops to-date.

Rest assured, your emails aren’t going to be sold. And, also, don’t worry, we’re not dropping any of the Mac OS X coverage, and we’re going to start talking about more than just the Eee PC. In fact, we’re going to cover every netbook and nettop, in a manner that the novice can understand, but the savvy can appreciate. Just like MacEee.com does right now.

What’s the name of the new site? Sorry, it’s a secret. When will the switchover happen? Next week, as early as Tuesday.

In the mean time, head on over to our new sister site, CheapenGadget.com where we’ll be covering Christmas Day and After Chirstmas tech deals online. For example, we’re currently tracking 4 GB microSD cards for only $3 after rebate, and top-of-the-line NVIDIA graphics cards for only $43 shipped after rebate!

Hi folks, as you probably have seen, we’ve not been so fast at updating the site lately.

We haven’t forgotten about you. In fact, we’re working on expanding the site greatly. It’s going to be such a huge expansion, we’re giving it a new name.

Everything Mac and Netbook will be covered on it, and we’ll have the resources to cater to both the novice and savvy users. From hacking to general news, we’ll cover it all, and we’ll start covering it soon.

So please, keep us in your feed readers (and add us if you haven’t already), and stay tuned. We’re going to have things well underway before Macworld Expo.

How To: Mac OS X 10.5.4 for the Eee PC 901 & 1000H

Welcome to our how-to guide for the ASUS Eee PC 901 and 1000 series notebooks. Please be sure to read our legal disclaimer before proceeding. As we have previously noted, we strongly suggest the purchase of the ASUS Eee PC 1000H due to its faster hard drive. However, this guide will work on any Eee PC 901 or 1000 series nettop computer.

We apologize for the delay in putting this together, however, it was well worth the wait. This guide benchmarks higher than any other process we tried, and it is completely stable. All functionality on the device works, except for sound and Ethernet (Wi-Fi does work very well).

Beyond that, read more to see the steps.

Why the 901 is Bad… Go with the Eee PC 1000H for Mac OS X

It has been two weeks, and many of you that have jumped the gun are complaining of low boot times. Well, we held off on posting our process until we could confirm the bad news. And, here it is: The 8 / 16 GB secondary SSD storage on the Eee PC 901 is just too slow to support Mac OS X.

As you may know, the Eee PC 901 uses two SSD storage arrays to achieve its 12 GB or 20 GB storage. It uses the speedy “true” 4 GB of SSD for the operating system, and then another 8 or 16 GB of flash memory-grade storage.

Unfortunately, the 8 / 16 GB storage is simply too slow to run Mac OS X properly. It causes boot times in excess of seven minutes.

So, what do we suggest? We suggest going with the Eee PC 1000H. The only differences are a slightly larger case (to support the 10-inch display), as well as an 80 GB hard drive. And, you can then partition that hard drive to dual-boot Windows XP and Mac OS X.

Our turbo-charged guide is just about done. So please, don’t go with install discs created for another nettop system. You wind up losing audio and Wi-Fi needlessly. Have patience, we’ll have a complete guide in just a few more days, if not sooner.

Hang in there, everyone!

For expediency, we ordered an Eee PC 901 to resume work. Both the Eee PC 901 and 1000H series feature Intel Atom processors, with the right chipsets to work with Mac OS X Leopard.

We still reccomend that you wait for an Eee PC 1000H, despite supplies being hard to come by. The SSD array in the Eee PC 901 is not optimized for Mac OS X, and will run poorly (as we saw with the Eee PC 700 and 900).

Unfortunately, the Eee PC 901 that we received, was dead on arrival. It simply won’t power up. So, we’re back to square one, waiting for a replacement unit. However, as soon as a working Eee PC 901 or 1000H arrives, we’ll get back to our goal of Leopard on the Eee series.

Update: Turns out, the system works… but the battery is defective. So, we’ll get to work, but the system will have to go back at some point.
